| Sensible Tucsonans Speak: Quotes from TST members This is another interactive part of this site. If you have a something to say about Light Rail and public transit in Tucson, please send us an email at info@TucsonLightRail.org Please also indicate whether we can use your name. We will post quotes as we get them, so keep checking back to see what we've posted... We have often lamented the poor state of transportation in this city, and your idea of light rail is the best one we've heard yet. -Matthew and Laura Tiscareno Light Rail is THE way to go. It has been a proven factor in many other cities transportation needs and is very environmentally friendly. I have ridden Amtrak passenger trains through Dallas, TX and witnessed a very busy light rail system there. In addition, Portland, OR, and Denver, CO, to name a few, have implemented very successful Light Rail systems in their localities. I live in the Casas Adobes area and wholeheartedly support any of Tucson's Light Rail initiatives. -Jim Esbeck Light Rail is the only sensible solution. -Dale & Liudyte Baker The city of Tucson is a frequent destination point, providing resources unavailable locally to rural residents. A light rail system will greatly enhance the mobility of regular rural visitors, many of whom are elderly and of modest means, as they complete their business in Tucson. -John Oehler I think your cause is a good and necessary one. We need more attention, education and funds devoted to alternative public transportation. -Patty Fong I have heard people talk about a transportation crisis. They are wrong. It is a transit crisis. Service is being cut and the system is experiencing problems in maintenance. I used to ride the bus in the early 90s, and I can compare it to today. Today, the insides of the buses are disgraceful and really reinforce the idea buses serve a second class of citizen. I do not fault the City, because I know everyone is trying to make it work, but funding always comes up short. That is why there needs to be a dedicated funding source for transit. A dedicated funding source for transit, however, would be a waste if there is no vision for this community. I can think of no better vision than one that incorporates light rail. Through light rail we can seriously accomplish some of the urban form that will make Tucson a livable and lovable place to be. It takes coordination between land use and transportation that has only been talked about in Tucson. -Diahn Swartz I was on county planning and zoning for 7 years and surely see the need for a good alternative to widening roads -- which, of course, immediately fill up. -Elinor Marcek My two-year old was recently diagnosed with leukemia. In searching for what causes this cancer so prevalent in the US and other developed nations, the most common answer is benzene, an ingredient in gasoline. I'd like to give up my car altogether, but I can't because the transporation strategy to date has relied on personal automobiles. Please create some saner alternatives. I will not support any freeway construction, but will support and fight for a comprehensive regional transit system featuring light rail. -Terry Nordbrock I am interested in pursuing any recourse to the erosion of services we are experiencing in public transportation, and which will be even more drastic in September, turning my 20 minute commute into an hour commute with 2 transfers rather than a direct route. Humph! -Marilyn Saul Light rail and public transit is something I've believed in for a long time and this cause is one I can get behind. If Phoenix can do something progressive like Light Rail, it is ridiculous for us not to. -Andy Mosier Never thought I'd live long enough to even see the concept. I think San Diego's rail system is wonderful. In the past, Tucson's answer to a traffic problem was to install another traffic light. Keep up the good work. A 40 year + Tucson resident. -Dale Miller Tucson is dying for light rail. The argument that Tucson is not big enough for light rail is ridiculous. Tucson is plenty big enough. And there is more than enough density. -Dale Shumway The Citizens Transportation Advisory Committee (CTAC) is on record as supporting a 1/2 cent sales tax dedicatid to transit which includes light rail. I personally feel that light rail is the way to go in Tucson and that the necessary volumes of riders could be gotten with other innovative multi-model uses. Such as: Transit Corridors, Zone Routes and Neighborhood Circulators. -Gean Lloyd, Secretary, Citizens Transportation Advisory Committee Even though I regard sales taxes as regressive, I would support a sales tax increase for transportation provided it was specifically earmarked for public transportation, but not for roads or related infrastructure. -Jack Foster If we are to retain the spirit and uniqueness that is Tucson, we must avoid freeway building! I don't want to see Tucson become another Phoenix with freeways dividing the city and encouraging more sprawl.Light rail seems to be the only sensible solution to our increasing traffic problems. I have ridden light rail systems in Portland and Salt Lake City and found both experiences convenient and enjoyable. -Carol Korich I'm trying to support mass transit in Tucson by using the bus, but it's 1-1/2 hours and three busses from downtown Tucson to the airport! That's crazy! If we don't fix Tucson's transportation mess, we'll destroy everything we love about it: a vibrant downtown, livable neighborhoods, and a magnificient natural environment. -Marion MacDonald and Keith McHenry We should have done this ten years ago. Can it really be true that Phoenix is leading us in developing alternate modes? This is probably the only "pro-growth" issue I would ever support. When in Chicagoland on our last vacation, riding the trains into the city was our children's favorite attraction. Let's rail against traffic problems! -Mike Sterner |
